Treatment for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Comments Off

Nephrogenic Sytemic Fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD), is a disorder typically suffered by patients with kidney failure. It may cause severe skin lesions, masses on the skin and can affect the joints. There is currently no cure for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy. However, early diagnosis and treatment may slow the progress of the disorder. The treatment for NSF/NFD may be done by a kidney specialist (nephrologist) and dermatologist working together. Though there is no consistently successful treatment for nephrogenic systemic fibrosis/nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy, improving kidney function is important. NSF/NFD has been linked to gadolinium-based contrast agents used in imaging studies, such as MRI’s.
