FDA Requests Revised Boxed Warning on Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha blockers

Comments Off

The FDA announced it has updated its Boxed Warning for the entire class of Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (“TNF-a”) blockers, citing evidence of serious bacterial infection risks.

TNF-a blockers, also called inhibitors, are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and refractory asthma. The risk of infection includes two bacterial pathogens – Legionella and Listeria. Patients treating with TNF-a blockers are at an increased risk to develop infections involving multiple organ systems, which may lead to death. Read the MedWatch safety alert here.

Sheller, P.C. is investigating cases of infections related to TNF-a. If you or someone you know is taking TNF-a had suffered infection by Legionella or Listeria, please contact our us at 1-800-833-2299.
