LAFAYETTE, La. — At the conclusion of the first Actos federal bellwether trial, a Louisiana federal jury has issued a $9 billion punitive damages verdict against Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. and Eli Lilly & Co., finding the defendants concealed the risk of cancer posed by the diabetes drug Actos.

After deliberating for four hours, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana jury determined in the April 7 verdict that Takeda must pay plaintiff Terrence Allen $6 billion in punitive damages and its partner, Lilly, must pay $3 billion.
