Paxil Birth-Defect Trial In Philadelphia

Comments Off

There is currently on trial going on in Philadelphia regarding allegations that Paxil causes birth defects. GlaxoSmithKline, maker of the antidepressant Paxil, is defending the lawsuit. According to taped testimony introduced at trial of a former Glaxo drug-safety executive, in 2001 Glaxo officials noted that Paxil was likely linked to birth defects in the fetus of a woman taking Paxil. The current case in Pennsylvania involves a Paxil user who asserts that her 3-year old son’s life-threatening heart defects were caused by Paxil. The plaintiff alleges that Glaxo was aware of the risks that Paxil causes birth defects, but hid those risks to boost profits. There are over 600 similar cases against Glaxo. Plaintiff’s lawyers in the Philadelphia case, captioned Kilker v. SmithKlineBeecham dba GlaxoSmithKline, argue that Glaxo aggressively sought to convince doctors to increase Paxil prescriptions for pregnant women dealing with anxiety.
