Two new studies are again bringing the drug Xarelto under fire and calling into question the safety of Johnson & Johnson’s blockbuster blood thinner. Most notably, the possible link to an increase in eye hemorrhaging and stomach bleeds.
While the new data is concerning, because these are two newfound side effects, the main worry is still uncontrollable bleeding events that lead to death. It is not yet known if lawsuit claims will come forward based on this new information. Pradaxa, a similar blood thinning drug, settled 4k claims that involved uncontrollable bleeding events for an approximate $160K per case.
There are currently 300 or more lawsuits filed over Xarelto in federal court in Louisiana and more cases, with similar claims, pending in Pennsylvania’s mass tort proceeding. Suits against Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceutical (subsidiary of J&J) include allegations of serious health issues and even death as a result of uncontrollable bleeding events. According to experts, at this time no antidote exists.
