Three of Four Pennsylvania Risperdal Lawsuits Favor Plaintiffs

Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary) is currently facing at least 1,600 Risperdal cases pending in Philadelphia court.

A prescription medication used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, Risperdal is at the center of numerous lawsuits on behalf of male plaintiffs nationwide who were prescribed the drug and claim they suffered from gynecomastia, the development of breasts. The condition is a result of elevated levels of the hormone prolactin, which they allege is associated with Risperdal use.

Recent statistics by the Philadelphia County Court of Common Please Complex Litigation Center and its director state a total of 1,606 Risperdal cases were filed as of Novemberm 2015. That number was expected to rise as 95 additional cases were filed that month.

Three of four concluded trials have favored victories for plaintiffs. In each case the jury found the drug company failed to warn about the risk of gynecomastia in children and adolescents.

In 2002, Risperdal was not yet approved by the FDA for use in adolescents. That approval did not come until 2006, along with a warning that the drug may lead to gynecomastia in some users.

As of December, twelve Risperdal cases were in discovery and heading to trial in 2016.
