Study: Brain Stent May Cause Strokes/Death

Comments Off

A stent used to treat stroke patients by opening an artery to the brain may cause additional strokes or death, according to the findings from a clinical trial of 450 patients.

In the study, stroke patients receiving the stent suffered subsequent strokes or death at a rate doubling patients who did not receive a stent. The study is reported in the latest New England Journal of Medicine, and it shows that 15 percent of patients receiving stents had additional strokes or died. Fewer than 6 percent of the study-group had such adverse responses.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the National Institute of Neurological Disorders found the stents to be so risky that it shut down the clinical trial in April.

Sheller, P.C. is investigating cases of patients who have suffered additional strokes or died after receiving a stent. If you or someone you know has suffered additional strokes or died after receiving a stent please contact us at 1-800-833-2299.
