The FDA announced it has updated its Boxed Warning for the entire class of Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (“TNF-a”) blockers, citing evidence of serious bacterial infection risks.
TNF-a blockers, also called inhibitors, are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and refractory asthma. The risk of infection includes two bacterial pathogens – Legionella and Listeria. Patients treating with TNF-a blockers are at an increased risk to develop infections involving multiple organ systems, which may lead to death. Read the MedWatch safety alert here.
