The results of research done in the United States and in the United Kingdom, affirms earlier evidence linking the use of hormones to increased cancer risk. The recent research demonstrates that hormone use can raise the risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American women. Hormone replacement therapy is also linked to a slightly elevated risk of ovarian cancer. Not surprisingly, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has criticized the research. It is the maker of Prempro and Premarin, two hormone replacement drugs. Millions of women stopped taking hormones in 2002 after research showed that their use was tied to a greater risk of breast cancer, stroke and heart problems. Hormone replacement therapy is used to treat symptoms of menopause that can’t be controlled with other means. The general advice from physicians is to use the lowest dose possible for the shortest amount of time possible.
