Law 360 is reporting that Stryler Corp. is estimating it will pay around $1.1 billion to settle personal injury claims associated with its recalled Rejuvenate and ABG modular-neck stems.

The settlement costs do not include “reasonable and customary costs of testing and treatment,” including revision surgery, associated with the faulty product. Stryker voluntarily recalled its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular neck stems in July 2012, because the devices could fret, corrode, causing swelling and other harm to body tissues.

Most of the lawsuits Stryker is facing are consolidated litigation in Minnesota federal court, and it will reportedly mediating more than 400 lawsuits in New Jersey state court, which were consolidated in January as multicounty litigation.

Stryker is one of several medical device giants fending off claims from individuals harmed by metal hip devices.  Bloomberg News recently reported that  Johnson & Johnson — parent company of ASR hip manufacturer DePuy’s — was considering an offer to pay $3 billion to settle more than 10,000 cases brought over its ASR device.

Our firm, Sheller, P.C., is handling a number of cases involved in the DePuy litigation, and we continue to investigate metal hip implant cases, including Stryker cases. Anyone with injuries you believe may be related to a DePuy or Stryker product should call (800) 883-2299 to discuss your legal rights.
