Cargill Inc. said Saturday, November 3, that it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef because it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
The ground beef was produced between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 at Cargill Meat Solutions’ plant in Wyalusing, Pa. and distributed to retailers across the country. They include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis.
The problem was found when the Agriculture Department discovered a sample of beef contaminated with E. coli on October 8. So far there have no illnesses have been reported to the company. Cargill says they are working with the USDA to remove all the beef from store’s shelves.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a common bacterium that resides in human intestines. Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, one particular strain, E. coli O157:H7, which is what was found in one sample of Cargill’s beef, produces a powerful toxin and can cause severe illness.
