Ikea North America Services LLC and the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission together released information detailing the massive recall, saying the retail chain has agreed to give consumers a wall anchoring kit in order to repair the dressers and drawer chests that can potentially tip over if they are not securely anchored to the wall. The regulator said that it has received reports of two children who were killed and 14 injuries caused by the recalled chests and dressers falling on them, adding that it is aware of three more deaths reportedly caused by other models of Ikea furniture since 1989.
Products included in the recall are Ikea-brand Malm chests, children’s chests and dressers taller than 23.5 inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29.5 inches.
Request for information from Ikea on whether the company is offering the recall repairs to its customers globally was not immediately returned Wednesday.
The CPSC urged customers to immediately stop using all Ikea children’s chests and dressers taller than 23.5 inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29.5 inches, unless they are securely anchored to the wall.
