Research suggests that excessive use of denture creams can cause serious health problems. In a study reported in the journal Neurology, researchers studied four denture-wearing patients who developed neurological problems. The patients all used denture creams in extremely large amounts, more than the recommended usage. Often, people use excessive amounts of denture creams when their dentures don’t fit properly. A significant finding in all of the patients blood testing was abnormally high levels of zinc, along with abnormally low levels of copper. Neurological health requires a balance of zinc and copper in the body. Each of these metals could be depleted by excess amounts of the other. The authors of the study determined that excessive zinc from denture creams caused the patients’ neurological problems. There was some mild improvement in symptoms when the patients stopped using denture creams and started taking copper supplements.
